Peyronie's disease

Question:

I am a 60-year-old male with some hard plaque on my penis for the last 3motnhs. My doctor told me is Peyronie's and I might need surgery. What are some non-surgical considerations for this disease ?

Answer:

Many men have a slight curve in their penis when erect, which can be completely normal and benign. In some cases, however, a significant degree of penile curvature may be due to Peyronie’s disease. This condition is characterized by the presence of fibrous scar tissue, called a Peyronie’s plaque, that causes the penis to bend or curve and, in some cases, become smaller. Patients with Peyronie’s disease often experience pain with intercourse, erectile dysfunction (ED), psychological distress, and even the inability to engage in penovaginal intercourse altogether. Because Peyronie’s disease can worsen over time, early treatment is critical for preventing worsening symptoms.

- Vitamin E

The early stages of Peyronie’s disease, may benefit from vitamin E supplements. Vitamin E, which is known for its antioxidant properties, is capable of neutralizing any aging or tissue damage resulting from this condition. Vitamin E can be found in vegetable oils, but a concentrated supplement is available over the counter.

- Omega 3 Fatty Acid

Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and can alleviate pain and discomfort. As a result, individuals with Peyronie’s disease can experience less discomfort and pain. In the way that it combats pain, the composition is similar to that of NSAIDs. This supplement can be found in foods such as salmon, but for optimal absorption, the concentrated form can be purchased over the counter.

- Castor oil:

Apply castor oil on the penis, particularly on the scar tissue and the plaque spots. The oil liquefies and softens the hard tissues and works effectively for the sufferers. The remedy takes about 12 weeks for the improvement and to completely straighten the penis. The result may vary from individual to individual. Also, it may take between 2-3 weeks until you see a difference in the appearance of the penis. Apply the oil every night at bedtime for best results.

- Acetyl-L-carnitine:

One can use carnitine supplements as they are very effective and safe for treating Peyronie’s disease. You can purchase Acetyl-L-carnitine from health food stores. This has proven to be more effective than the counterparts available in the market. The dosage for the supplement is provided on the bottle.

- Gotu Kola:

Use herbs like Gotu Kola as they help decrease the problems related to the formation of fibrous tissue below the skin. The herb is useful in the treatment of the curvature of the penis. It is made available as an ointment, capsule, and tincture. Some of the common side effects associated with the consumption of gotu kola include headache, dizziness, upset stomach, and nausea. This herb in some cases can also interact with certain diabetes and cholesterol-lowering medications. Therefore, it is always advised to consult a specialist before using gotu kola for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease. This herb is already available in capsules and tablets. However, it also comes with side effects like headaches, upset stomach, and dizziness.

- Bromelain

This enzyme is present in pineapple juice and pineapple stem. It prevents the deposition of fibrin, which causes the thickening of the fibrous connective tissues in the penis.

Bromelain is an effective supplement in aiding Peyronie’s disease. In fact, the Austin Diagnostic Clinic recommends a dose of 750 mg of Bromelain three times a day on an empty stomach to prevent Peyronie’s disease.

- Coenzyme Q-10

.The organs with the highest energy requirements like heart, livers and kidney have the highest CoQ10 concentrations in the body.

One study examines the efficiency of CoQ10 for Peyronie’s disease. The said study includes patients between 18-60 years old with erectile dysfunction, the presence of plaque and pain, or penile curvature for 12 months. The results show that 54% of men who took CoQ10 experienced improvement in their condition. The mean reduction in curvature was 12 degrees with a range of 4-20 degrees. Thus, this supplement could work well for men with PD.

- Penile traction therapy

Penile traction therapy (PTT) involves wearing a device on your penis for a certain amount of time each day to help straighten it or reverse a curve. These devices typically consist of two parallel stabilizing rods that run alongside the shaft of the penis, connected to a plastic support ring at the base of the penis and a distal ring below the head of the penis. The rods can be extended with a spring to stretch the penis.
