low libido in women.jfif

Sexual dysfunction refers to persistent or recurring problems during any stage of the sexual response. These problems can prevent an individual or a couple from experiencing sexual satisfaction and can cause distress.
Low libido is a type of sexual dysfunction. It refers to a reduction in the desire to engage in sexual activity.
Common Causes of Low Libido
Low libido can have a number of causes, both internal and external. Stress, low self-esteem, relationship problems, and a lack of sleep can all contribute to reduced libido. Alcohol and drug use and some medications, such as those used to treat depression or cancer, can affect your libido as well. Women's sexual desires naturally fluctuate over the years. Highs and lows commonly coincide with the beginning or end of a relationship or with major life changes, such as pregnancy, menopause, or illness. Some medications used for mood disorders also can cause low sex drive in women.
Many times, a low libido can indicate low levels of oxytocin. Oxytocin is what I like to call the “love and bonding” hormone. It makes you want to bond and cuddle. It doesn’t turn you on, but if you don’t want to cuddle, it’s hard to get aroused, hence, a lowered sex drive.
During our initial new patient consultation, I’ll ask patients lifestyle questions to learn more about what their work, home, love, and family life look like. From a natural medicine perspective, a person’s lifestyle is key to good health. I’ll often dig deeper to figure out whether any of my patients are dealing with:
LIFESTYLE (DIET AND ENVIRONMENTAL)
Lifestyle stressors or imbalances
Nutritional deficiencies
Too low body fat
Current or past use of statins
A diet too low in fat (high carb, low fat, or… just low in calories)
Environmental exposures (including endocrine disruptors)
Substance abuse
Sleep deprivation
When we consume a diet low in fat for years on end, our sex hormones are one of the first things to suffer. Our hormones are built upon cholesterol as their precursor. A diet low in cholesterol will decrease the production of pregnenolone, which then lowers testosterone and DHEA – Increasing healthy fats within your diet is integral to getting your hormones on track. we have a comprehensive recipe for Boosting your libido based on your root problem.
