Chronic Prostatitis
Men's Health
Chronic Prostatitis is prostate inflammation that lasts for at least three months.
The prostate is a small gland located below the male bladder. It surrounds the urethra, produces a small amount of seminal fluid, and is important for the pH balance of semen.
Prostatitis may be caused by a bacterial infection, but in many cases, the cause of the condition is unknown. It can produce uncomfortable symptoms such as burning during urination, a frequent need to urinate, and pain in the lower back.
When a bacterial infection causes Chronic Prostatitis, it can be treated with antibiotics. When the cause is unknown, treatment will be more complex. However, most of the time, urinary symptoms persist even long after eradication of the infection, and despite using other categories of medication such as pain killers, muscle relaxants, -anxiolytic medication, the patient is not symptom-free.
At this stage, Chronic Prostatitis becomes more intractable. It manifests in pain in the pelvis, perineum, testicles, scrotum, lower back, lower abdomen, urethra, and legs. It can also cause neurological problems, such as low energy, mood, mental disturbance, etc.
Typical symptoms of the disease are the frustrations of interacting with friends, family, and medical professionals. All these consequences can induce big problems, even suicide.
Though it is not cancer, the long treatment course can make patients painful, severely reducing their quality of life.
Chronic Prostatitis is indeed a factor that can cause disrupted relationships and divorce. Patients gradually have difficulties dealing with work, and social interaction, which affects all aspects of life. Often, patients direct their greatest anger at their doctor. It is patients that sometimes put more pressure on themselves. Many Chronic Prostatitis symptoms are "in their head" actually.
Why can't chronic prostatitis patients get rid of it?
Why it's hard to cure chronic prostatitis?
Though millions of dollars and years of research are spent, Chronic Prostatitis treatments do not give much hope to patients. And indeed, these treatments (antibiotics, alpha-blockers, prostate injections, prostate massage, spinal implants, etc.) have no satisfying result. It can directly affect patients' confidence and expectation of the prostatitis cure. This is also a reason why a lot of chronic prostatitis patients get frustrated and irritable. In fact, the emotion of the patients can also influence the effect of prostatitis treatment. This vicious cycle makes the disease more difficult to cure.
