Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Men's Health

Erectile Dysfunction (ED), formerly called impotence, refers to the inability of a man to maintain a firm erection long enough to have sexual intercourse. Although Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is more common in older men, this common problem can occur at any age.

There are many potential causes for Erectile Dysfunction (ED), both psychological (e.g., anxiety, depression, fatigue) and physiological (e.g., low testosterone, heart disease, diabetes mellitus).

Having trouble maintaining an erection from time to time isn’t necessarily a cause for concern, but if prolonged may cause stress and relationship problems and affect self-esteem.

You should not feel embarrassed to seek professional healthcare if you experience Erectile Dysfunction (ED), as it may be a sign of a more serious underlying health condition that requires treatment.

The natural approach is not like taking a "Viagra" to effect immediately, but with many short-term and long-term side effects. Then if you are seeking a natural process, you should be patient because together we can target the main reasons for your Erectile Dysfunction and, by building your health and balance, address your main problem.

There are some situations in which we recommend continuing your conventional medications, but we help you by adding natural medicine to decrease the dosage and finally stop taking them.

In my practice, I use several laboratory studies for the diagnosis and treatment of ED. Basic blood work, including complete blood cell count, comprehensive metabolic profile, prostate-specific antigen test, thyroid studies, and lipid profile, is essential. In addition to these,

I always run 4 hormone studies. The hormones that I request are Testosterone, Estradiol, Dehydroepiandrosterone, and Cortisol.

Last, it is essential to perform a urine dip in the office to screen for glucose, proteins, or blood in the urine. Allopathically, a Nocturnal Penile Tumescence Test may be performed. This test monitors how rigid and how long the penis stays erect throughout the night. It is used to determine whether the cause of ED is psychogenic or not. Low values on the nocturnal penile tumescence test can often point to vascular-related issues, and Doppler ultrasonography of the penile arteries may be ordered to observe arterial blood flow.

In addition, we Identify and address underlying factors in your lifestyle (e.g., stress; alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana use; use of certain medications; sedentary lifestyle; excessive bicycling) or general health (e.g., heart disease, diabetes mellitus, testosterone deficiency, anxiety, obesity, metabolic syndrome) that may be contributing to your Erectile Dysfunction (ED) symptoms

There are some situations in which we recommend continuing your conventional medications. Still, we help you by adding natural medicine to be able to decrease the dosage and finally stop taking them.

Patients usually ask me if they can take "Viagra" or not. My answer is ''it depends on ''.
If all methods of naturopathic treatment fail, or if they are already on "Viagra", they can continue it with naturopathic medicine but taper it slowly till they become independent

The TCM Theory

According to TCM theory, the kidney and liver are the two primary organs related to ED in the TCM understanding. The kidney stores the essence (jing), while the liver stores blood (Xue).

In addition to storing blood, the liver can modulate blood volume and maintain the flow of blood. Sexual and reproductive functions are also under the control of the liver. Thereby, the kidney and liver are two important organs with a wide range of functions, particularly male sexual dysfunction in TCM.

The diagnosis of disease in TCM, unlike medical diagnosis, lies in identifying patterns of disharmony. Some practitioners like myself look to use the best of both worlds to figure out the diagnosis of problems, especially as it relates to erectile dysfunction (ED). Because ED is quite complex to cure, it is best to just prevent it from ever happening. Try taking products that contain propionyl-l-carnitine as this increases your overall energy and blood flow around your body and this decreases your chances of developing an ED.

Starting with the pillars of TCM, the key introductory concepts that must be understood are the basics of yin and yang theory and the nature of qi (energy), Xue (blood), and jing (fluid essence).

This helps us to understand the importance of the nature of jing as in TCM jing corresponds to the essence of a person. It has also been characterized to be related to the reproductive system and has been thought to characterize sperm in traditional texts. Jing is also closely related to shen or spirit, and it is a traditional concept that the spirit of a person and its seminal essence are closely related (regardless of their sex or gender). Jing and shen also represent spirit, vitality, growth, and renewal and are fundamental concepts of sexuality in TCM.
