Holistic Approach to Chronic Kidney Diseases

A holistic approach to kidney disease includes a healthy lifestyle, diet, supplements, and herbs. We start with a kidney-friendly diet and will continue in the following sessions with other methods of natural approaches to kidney disease.

To maintain kidney health, follow a diet that limits sodium, cholesterol, and fat while emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean proteins. Here are vital tips:

  1. Plate Composition: Allocate half your plate to vegetables and fruits, a quarter to lean protein, and a quarter to whole grains.

  2. Limit Sodium: Aim for 2,300 milligrams per day. Cook at home, use fresh ingredients, employ creative seasonings, check package labels, and rinse canned foods to reduce sodium intake.

  3. Mindful Protein Intake: Limit protein intake to 0.6 to 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, particularly if you have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Opt for healthier protein sources and watch portion sizes.

  4. Choose Complex Carbs: Opt for natural carbohydrates in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and lentils, avoiding added sugars in desserts and packaged foods.

  5. Limit Saturated and Trans Fats: Restrict saturated fats to less than 10% of daily calories, avoiding sources like meats, full-fat dairy, butter, and certain oils. Avoid trans fats found in baked goods and fried foods. Choose unsaturated fats from sources like fatty fish, avocados, and nuts.

  6. Heart and Kidney Health Connection: Recognize the interconnectedness of heart and kidney health. Diets high in saturated and trans fats increase the risk of heart disease, impacting kidney health.

  7. Phosphorus and Potassium Monitoring: For individuals with CKD, monitor phosphorus and potassium levels, as excess can cause health issues. Limit foods high in phosphorus, such as animal protein and dairy, and be cautious of potassium-rich foods.

Remember to consult your doctor for personalized advice on managing phosphorus and potassium levels based on your health condition. In the next session, we will discuss supplements and vitamins for CDK.
